Astrophotography
Witnessing a picture of astronomical marvels like the Orion Nebula is a remarkable experience, but it pales in comparison to the awe-inspiring views witnessed firsthand through a telescope, regardless of its size. Capturing an image like the one mentioned demands a unique technique, specialized telescope camera systems, and extensive imaging time, all of which necessitate meticulous post-production editing. At our Astrophotography session, we offer an opportunity to delve into the fundamentals of this intricate technique. Our knowledgeable team will guide you through the process, unveiling the secrets behind capturing stunning celestial photographs. From setting up the equipment to mastering the art of post-production editing, you’ll gain invaluable insights into this captivating world of astrophotography. Prepare to deepen your understanding and appreciation of the technical expertise required to capture celestial wonders with breathtaking clarity.

Asteroid Photometry
The observatory has been the centre for Minor planet research since 2007. Numerous scientific papers have been published in scientific journals making BMO a serious professional-amateur astronomical observatory in the southern hemisphere.
We are continuing to function as a research observatory for years to come.

Binary asteroid discoveries
Binary asteroid research is the main focus of Blue Mountains observatory. The detection of the minute light curve deviation that reveals the tell-tale signs of the presence of a satellite. Persistent observation of an asteroid night after night together with several other observers from across the globe allow the discovery of such object possible.

Advanced Astro Tour
Astronomy is limited mainly by geographical location and weather. When one part of the world is night-time, the other is daytime and when one location has good weather the other may not.
With photometry or time series observation, maximising the continuous observation is important. JBL is one such observatory and expansion of the network will be the plan for the future.

Professional collaboration and NEA observations
Discoveries in astronomy usually involves the collaboration of different discipline using different astronomical instruments and methods. Near Earth Asteroid binaries are one of such important discoveries that usually has extremely small window of opportunity for observation. With 2017 YE5, a radio telescope at Arecibo observatory shows the presence of an equal size moon. They immediately called for international photometric observers for collaboration to narrow down the rotation period of the primary body and the orbital period of the moon.
Research Grants
Thank you Planetary Society for generously providing the 2015 and 2018 grants that made possible the research work at BMO.

The Star gazing was unanimously the favourite part of our trip for all children and both adults (it even beat scenic world!)
What we didn't expect to come away with was an experience which open our eyes to something absolutely amazing. The Astro tour was INCREDIBLE.
Felicity
The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the Star Gazing experience.
Family with a budding 7 year old astronomer
In spite of the worst weather possible, 2 days of torrential rain, we had a lovely time. The wood burning stove was awesome and the view was beautiful.
Karen and Mike
We got to see Saturn (amazing), star clusters and the moon. It was life changing and we will be back
Virginia, John and Erikah
Looking at the sky seems so boring, but the astronomer explains everything so well even for kids. He interests you in astronomy.
Virginia, John and Erikah
If I were to describe to someone not only the type of accommodation I was looking for but also the experience tied to it, this would be it.
